Reflection – 5 May 2024Sixth Sunday of Easter Fr. Serapio López
"This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you." The commandment of love is part of the farewell discourse that Lord Jesus addresses to his disciples. The Lord Jesus was always sensitive to the suffering and pain of the poor and sick; of the hungry and abandoned, He showed them His merciful love. He spoke to them with great tenderness: "What do you want me to do for you?"
The Risen Lord exhorts his disciples, and also us, to follow his way of love and mercy, but not just any love, but that which comes from the heart of God. The disciples bore witness to that love by their words and actions.
The Gospel tells us, "Let us love one another, for love comes from God," and St. Peter tells us, "Now I understand that God makes no distinction between persons." This is the path, which we need to reflect on and live.
Today God's word focuses on divine love. In our time there is a lot of talk about love, but we are quite far from the teaching of the Risen Lord. The words of the Gospel are wonderful: "He who does not love does not know God, for God is love."
It is necessary to reflect on the Gospel, to listen to it several times: “No one has greater love for his friends than to lay down his life for them” To love is to serve and respect others, it is to lay down one's life for those one loves. Love only comes from God; love is God's gift and not mere human effort.
May the Lord grant us to hunger and thirst to love God and to love our brothers and sisters. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by the Gospel, the word that gives us life and eternal life. Let's find time to listen to the Gospel, use our cell phone or computer to read and reflect on God's word.
God gives us wisdom and intelligence, strength and hope, through his Word to illuminate our path, so that our life may be simpler and humbler, and to love one another so that our church of San Isidro may bear witness to joy and brotherhood, to peace and happiness.
May the Holy Eucharist be the source and strength of our Christian journey. Let us make the effort to live with joy and hope; with dignity and respect for the Holy Eucharist, which is the source of life and love for all. Amen.
